Gladys Margary (Marjorie) Smiley was the fourth of the eleven children of Thomas Alexander Ward and Marion Harley (Bunn) Smiley.

Gladys lived for three and a half years, dying at the family's Arygle Street, St Kilda, home on 1 April 1902, suffering from laryngitis. She was buried at St Kilda Cemetery the following day.

She was listed as Gladys Margary on her birth certificate and Gladys Marjorie on her death certificate.
