Bunn/Smiley family link

On 26 August 1894, Marion Harley Bunn, daughter of Henry Alfred and Margaret (Wilson) Bunn of St Kilda, married Thomas Alexander Ward Smiley, son of Shepherd Parkman and Margaret Phoebe (Ward) Smiley. This part of the Smiley family website explores a little of the Bunn family story from ancestors in England in the late 1600s down to the Australian generation of Marion Harley Bunn.

Gilbert Norman Bunn, born on 25 December 1877 at Caulfield, Victoria, was the 12th of the 12 children of Henry Alfred and Margaret (Wilson) Bunn. He worked as a manager in Queensland centres including Rockhampton and Toowoomba.

On 27 December 1908 in Cairns, he married Amy Taylor who was born on 11 August 1880. The couple had three children.

Their granddaughter Joan Gardner (nee Allan) has written that Gilbert, who lived in Queensland, visited her family in Melbourne often, staying in Victoria for three months of the year so his wife Amy, an English woman, could escape the Queensland heat.

In contrast to the quiet nature of his brother Edgar, Gilbert enjoyed a drink and was a smoker.

Amy Bunn died in Queensland in 1950, Gilbert Bunn died in Queensland on 30 December 1966. The picture at right shows Gilbert in 1951.
