His sister Jean (Smiley) Nixon recalled later in life that when their mother took the four older children by boat to South Australia where her husband was working, she put Doug in a drawer from the boat cabin's chest of drawers so he would not roll out of his bed at night.

Like other members of the family, Doug attended Brighton Road State School in St Kilda, and he later went to Wesley College on a scholarship.

He married at Kew on 2 July 1927 Gertrude Martha McIntyre, [click on photo to see a larger image] who was born at Kew on 15 February 1904, daughter of James and Annie Alice McIntyre. The couple had three children.

Doug died from heart disease at Ouyen Hospital on 18 July 1936. He was aged only 32. He and Gertie had been wheat farming at Tempy. Doug was buried at Brighton Cemetery on July 20.

Gertie returned to Melbourne to live with their three children. She died at Kew on 10 October 1980, aged 76.
